Heat is hard on garage doors here
In Sacramento, garage doors take a beating from summer sun. National Weather Service records include stretches of nine or more consecutive days at or above 100°F, and a dark, uninsulated steel door facing west can get very hot on summer afternoons. That heat radiates into the garage and, in attached garages, into the house. It also dries out weatherstripping, bottom seals and wood finishes, and can soften the vinyl on some door backs.
If your garage feels like an oven in summer, an insulated door can make a real difference, especially if the garage shares a wall with living space, has a bedroom above it, or houses a second refrigerator or freezer. Lighter colors reflect more sun. Replacing worn weatherstripping and the bottom seal helps keep hot air out and conditioned air in.
Wood doors in the Sacramento sun
Wood garage doors suit many of Sacramento's older neighborhoods, but sun and heat dry them out. They need regular refinishing to prevent cracking, peeling and warping, and the sides facing the afternoon sun wear fastest. If you love the look of wood but not the maintenance, wood-look steel or composite doors are lower-maintenance alternatives. Ask an installer to show you samples in sunlight before you decide.
Openers in a hot garage
Openers, their logic boards and their batteries live in the garage. Extreme heat can shorten the life of electronics and backup batteries. If your opener's backup battery doesn't hold a charge, replace it according to the manufacturer's instructions. Safety sensors can also be thrown off by direct, low-angle sunlight hitting the receiving sensor in late afternoon, which can make the door reverse unexpectedly. If that's happening, a technician can relocate or shield the sensors.
Winter rain and fog
Sacramento's winters are mild, but rain and tule fog bring damp stretches. Water that blows under a worn bottom seal can pool on the garage floor and damage stored items. Replace a cracked or flattened bottom seal and check that the driveway slopes away from the door. Damp conditions also rust springs, cables and hardware faster; lubricating moving parts in fall helps.
Older homes and narrow garages
Some older Sacramento homes have smaller or nonstandard garage openings, low headroom, or single-car garages that have been widened. Standard doors may not fit without modification, and some openers won't fit with low headroom. A careful measurement, including headroom, side room and backroom, avoids surprises.
Before you hire
Ask Sacramento garage door installers which insulated doors and colors they'd recommend for a sunny, west-facing opening, whether they'll replace weatherstripping and the bottom seal, and whether the job needs a permit. Get the price, warranty and schedule in writing, and look up the contractor's California license with the CSLB.
Annual service
A yearly tune-up, ideally in spring before the heat, keeps a door running smoothly: spring balance and wear, cables, rollers and hinges, hardware tightness, lubrication, opener settings and a test of the safety reversal. Ask for a written list of anything that's wearing out.
